West Cornwall MP Derek Thomas attended a drop-in event at the House of Commons to hear about the RSPCA’s ‘Generation Kind’ initiative which helps teach compassion to new generations and works to protect animals.

More than 50 unpaid volunteers from the Helston area enjoyed coffee, tea and cake at the first of the West Cornwall MP Derek Thomas’s 2020 Big Thank You events.

This is a big year for UK fishing and on Wednesday next week fishing industry representatives including from Newlyn gather in Westminster to discuss the key considerations that must be addressed for the industry as we leave the EU and the Commons Fisheries Policy.

In what is becoming an annual tradition, West Cornwall MP Derek Thomas is once again hosting a series of ‘Big Thank You’ events to celebrate the work of volunteers in the community.

This Friday, 10th January I will be in St Ives Library from 8.30 until 10am and available for anyone who wishes to raise an issue or concern with me on a one-to-one basis. On Friday, 24th the same will apply but this time in Helston Central Methodist Church.

Every year, here in West Cornwall, I learn about a group of friends or neighbours who are putting on a meal or get together to provide some Christmas cheer and company for people who are on their own. These acts of kindness are what makes our communities great.

The final declaration of the 2019 election campaign has seen Conservative Derek Thomas returned as the West Cornwall & Isles of Scilly MP for the third time with an increased majority.

Tonight there have been a number of votes in Parliament, first a vote passing legislation to allow the UK to leave without a deal on April 12th rather than revoke Article 50, reversing the outcome of the EU referendum.

MPs have given the PM a clear mandate to return to Brussels to address the issue of the backstop. I have consistently said that I believed a withdrawal agreement could secure the support of enough MPs if concerns over the backstop could be addressed.
