The fatal accident on the A30 last week was a personal tragedy for the bereaved and will be a trauma in many lives long after we have all moved on.
I know many people were saddened to hear of the loss of life and want something to be done to spare other families a similar bereavement. They are quite rightly renewing calls to carry out urgent improvement works to this stretch of the A30 from St Erth to Newtown Roundabout on the way to Penzance. In the short term we need to make it safer for motorists to join the A30 from St Erth and we need to ease the flow of traffic at the Rospeath Crossroads in Crowlas. The next step is to agree a road improvement scheme that makes the road safer overall and keeps traffic moving freely in and out of Penzance.
Earlier in July, I had spoken with Andrew Jones MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Transport, to ask him to visit the constituency to discuss with me what realistic improvements could be made to this section of the A30. I want this stretch of road to be included in the Government’s next tranche of road improvement schemes because it is no longer capable of safely meeting the demands put upon it.
Relief is the correct word to use to explain how campaigners felt when we heard that Cornwall Council had approved the West Langarth Retail application. This approval is an important step in the journey towards delivering the long-awaited Stadium for Cornwall. Any building project has its share of obstacles and ‘hiccups’ so, as promised, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport is visiting West Cornwall to set up a working group to keep the project moving forward. This group will be made up of the key players including sports organisations, the developers, Cornwall Council, Penwith and Truro College, Sport England and Cornish MP’s. My understanding is that the stadium will be completed in 2017 and there is no doubt in my mind it will be a boost for Cornwall and a boost for our local economy.
