State Visit of Donald Trump

Thank you for your email raising concern about the possible State visit by Donald Trump. During the debate on Monday 30th January, the Secretary of State made it quite clear that the State visit is an invitation from the Queen. I am sure you are aware by now that the Speaker has intervened and confirmed that he will not be inviting the President to address both Houses of Parliament. This matter will resolve itself in time.

It is a strong tradition in the UK to defend vulnerable people and minority groups and the actions of the new President are in direct contrast to the work of the UK Government in offering sanctuary and safety to asylum seekers and vulnerable people. We will not veer from this tradition and should any visit go ahead this year, I hope it presents an opportunity to impress upon the President the need to foster positive relationships between people of any race, colour and creed. I fully understand the horror that people feel because of recent actions by Donald Trump.

Thank you once again for raising this with me, please do not hesitate to contact me if you require any further information.
