West Cornwall MP Derek Thomas has welcomed the Government’s announcement of £370m of funding for the Post Office. This funding which is allocated for the period from April 2018 to March 2021 will enable the Post Office to continue to invest in its network, products and to meet the needs of customers.
Mr Thomas commented, “I will now press Post Office Ltd further regarding how they intend to secure post offices services in rural villages in West Cornwall, especially given the recent bank closure announcements. I have been making the case that Post Office Ltd lack a clear positive direction and flexibility for rural post services. Retailers are not convinced that hosting post office counters within their business is an attractive or financially rewarding concept so this extra Government funding is welcome as it is becoming increasingly challenging to find solutions for rural services.
“I hope that this new funding will safeguard the future of at-risk rural services by delivering bespoke solutions for areas such as The Lizard.”
Mr Thomas concluded, “communities are working extremely hard to make town and village centres thrive. Post Office must see itself as an active partner in this and this additional Government support, which I have argued for, must lead to greater security around rural village post office services.”
