January 22nd: An update on changes proposed for Penzance Crown Post Office.
This is a branch that the Post Office has identified for possible franchising. The Post Office are advertising the opportunity for a potential franchise partner to apply to take on the branch. In the event of a suitable partner being found, any changes to the Post Office would be subject to a public consultation.
The Post Office have written to me as follows:
“We believe that franchising Penzance branch gives us the best opportunity to protect access to services and create a viable Post Office for our customers in the town.
Our aim is to create a sustainable and profitable Crown network and to meet our ever changing customer demands. To help achieve this, we’ve been looking at new ways to grow our income and to cut our costs, including introducing new retail ranges and products and re-negotiating our contracts and leases.”
UPDATE: As stated on this page on January 22nd the Post Office are looking at what options could be available to reduce their overheads.
No-one is suggesting that we will lose a town centre Post Office. However, after useful discussions today with Cllr Tim Dwelly and Cllr Jim McKenna, I am seeking a meeting with the powers that be to stress the importance of the Post Office in its current location and set out some ideas that we have that would make the building a valuable asset rather than a drain on resources.
The Post Office have promised a consultation and I urge everyone who is concerned to make the most of this opportunity.
As soon as I have more information I shall share it on this page.
