A small group of cross-party MPs met with the Public Health Minister Jane Ellison MP, to discuss the Government’s response to the rise in the number of people developing diabetes. Next year the Government are launching the National Diabetes Prevention Programme.
The UK will be the first country to deliver a diabetes prevention programme of this scale.
The strategy focuses on the following ‘people groups’
Those who have Type 2 diabetes ‘to avoid grim complications’
Currently the cost to the NHS treating Type 2 Diabetes is £5.62billion. The strategy is intended to shift the focus and NHS funding towards preventing diabetes and managing the condition better to improve the quality of life for individuals.
