MP’s column

What a grand day out we had welcoming Olympic champion Helen Glover back to her home town of Penzance on Sunday. Helen and Mr Deadly 60 (as he is known in our household) gave us a day to remember and you can’t help but feel proud that one of the best sportswomen in the world comes from West Cornwall. The staff at Penzance Town Council and Humphry Davy School organised a fitting welcome for Helen and did a great job.
This weekend the first annual MP’s Health Fairs take place in Helston (Central Methodist Church)  and Penzance (Pengarth Day Centre).
I have organised these so that anybody who would like to know what is available to them can come along, eat cake, drink tea or coffee and speak to the experts. A number of organisations will be available to speak to and advise how we can save money and keep well this winter.
I have invited Electrical Safety First to come and advise on electrical safety in our homes.  Also Cornwall Energy Plus, who can help with grants for home insulation and explain how a smart meter works. South West Water will be there to help us reduce our water bills and Cornwall Council and the Fire Brigade will be on hand to discuss keeping safe and well during winter.
Reynolds Opticians have kindly agreed to talk about our eye health and care at Pengarth on Saturday and iSight will demonstrate the various aids and devices available to help people with impaired sight around the home and out and about.
Members of the much loved Penwith Living Well team and Zebra are available to offer advice and support regarding health and social care and NHS Kernow Clinical Commission Group can help with any concerns about managing prescriptions and medicines.
Other organisations will be there to help including Disability Cornwall, giving guidance and help for those who have disabilities.
All this on Friday from 10am at Helston Central Methodist Church and from 10am at Pengarth Day Care Centre in Penzance on Saturday.
