A database containing information about more than a hundred organisations which offer West Cornwall folk help and support will soon be available on the website of local MP Derek Thomas.
The organisations featured on the database will vary considerably, ranging from those which support people with drug and alcohol issues, the homeless and refugees to smaller, hyper-local groups which organise events like coffee mornings, lunch clubs and toddler play sessions.
The database is being compiled by Simon Jones, a member of Mr Thomas’s office staff, who has been given a special role for social responsibility.
“I’ve asked Simon to take on this dedicated job as the voluntary sector and organisations like Addaction and St Petroc’s have a huge role to play in ensuring the wellbeing of all of us living in West Cornwall,” said Mr Thomas.
“There are a fantastic range of activities available to people in West Cornwall but in some cases there are problems getting the information about the events out to a wider audience so I hope the database will help people access the help and social activities they are looking for,” he said.
“The database should also help to identify any places in the constituency where there is poor provision and we can then work to fill the gaps.”
Mr Jones said he was looking forward to getting involved in practical ways to make a difference in West Cornwall.
“The area of social responsibility affects everyone and I hope this work will be of benefit to those in need in our community,” he said.
“It is a privilege to be involved with local people addressing local issues and I share Derek’s view that the area of social responsibility should be a top priority.”
If you run a community event in West Cornwall, please contact Derek via email at firstname.lastname@example.org, giving full details of the event/s you run and where and when they take place; the information database should be available to view at www.derekthomas.org early in April.
