A former Government Chief whip was the guest in the first of what is likely to be a series of business meetings organised by West Cornwall MP Derek Thomas.
Mark Harper, who is the lead MP for a group of South West MPs who lobby for funding for schools, NHS, police, local authorities and investment in infrastructure, spoke to more than a dozen businessmen and women over breakfast at the Queens Hotel, Penzance recently.
Representatives from the housing, tourism and financial sectors as well as the fishing industry in West Cornwall were at the meeting and topics discussed included Brexit negotiations, with special reference to the fishing industry, business rates and the viability and value of the HS2 rail route.
Mr Harper said he enjoyed coming to Penzance again, having previously visited the town at Mr Thomas’s invitation in 2013.
“The breakfast gave me a great chance to talk to people in Penzance about the exciting opportunities that lie ahead for businesses in West Cornwall,” he said.
Mr Harper’s visit was welcomed by Anthony Holman, owner of the Queens Hotel: “It’s a good idea to invite Government ministers and other politicians of influence to Penzance for non-political meetings so they can see for themselves what the challenges are down here in the far South West.”
