The UK has some of the brightest brains in the world. Today I visited Imperial College London to look at what research they do with public money.
The Hamlyn Centre for Robotic Surgery, at the college, is a place where robots are being developed that are so intricate and clever that cancerous cells can be destroyed without damaging good cells and brain surgery can be carried out where previously surgery would have been too dangerous.
I also visited the Data Science Institute where technology is so advanced they are working with NASA to study the surface of Mars. The picture below shows up-to-date images of the Mars Rover taking a photo of itself and its surroundings. I am pictured with Prof Yike Guo and Prof Neil Alfred MBE.
I visited the college as part of a piece of work to address the digital skills gap which is important for the far Southwest as these are the areas where we can create well paid skilled jobs.
