West Cornwall MP Derek Thomas has welcomed the launch of two toolkits designed to help tackle fuel poverty across the county.
Funded by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy the toolkits will be used by Cornwall Council and Citizens Advice as they tackle the problem of cold homes and the impact they have on health, life chances, work and wellbeing.
The latest government statistics from 2015 show that about 2.5 million households (11%) in England were estimated to be living in fuel poverty.
Fuel poverty is caused by a combination of low household income, inefficient housing and high energy costs and can affect the mental and physical health of those living in cold homes and have serious impacts on their quality of life.
“Fuel poverty is a particular issue in West Cornwall where many homes are fairly old and not very well insulated,” said Mr Thomas.
“Anything that helps make it easier for those who are trying to help those suffering fuel poverty should be welcomed. The toolkits should encourage greater collaboration and better integration between different agencies.”
