West Cornwall MP Derek Thomas has welcomed the news that all Cornwall Council pay and display car parks will be free in the evenings from 1 April.
The proposals form part of a wider review of parking tariffs and the way residents can pay for using council car parks, including changes to seasonal parking permits.
Mr Thomas said: “I am very glad that Cornwall Council has listened to the views of local residents through last year’s Town Parking Review.
“This is a very sensible move and one which I doubt will make a significant dent in the income Cornwall Council gets from their car parks.
“The announcement for free night-time parking will be welcomed by businesses working in the night-time economy in our town centres and by local residents who struggle to find parking spaces in streets close to their home.
“However I would urge Cornwall Council to make greater efforts to reduce parking charges during the day.
“Retailers across West Cornwall consistently put high parking charges as the main reason why fewer people come into town and instead choose to shop online or in out-of-town shopping centres and online retailers.”
